Sunderland Carers Centre is passionate about helping carers not only fulfil their caring role, but to help them back into employment. Being a carer does not mean that you have to give up your personal and professional goals – via our Learning Hub, carers can access a variety of courses, which range from qualifications relating to their caring role to how to look after their own health and wellbeing.Autism Awareness Early Bird Programme
Sunderland Carers Centre were fortunate to secure funding which will enable us to deliver The Parent Carer Early Bird programme, a Face-to-face training programme underwritten by the National Autistic Society.
This training service supports parent/carers of young people aging up to 10 years old who have received a diagnosis of Autism. The programme aims to provide a consistent approach across home and school environment by encouraging parents/carers to attend sessions with them going on to share the information with school professional who are working regularly with their child. Parents will learn a range of strategies to help support sensory seeking behaviours as well as being shown the benefits of visuals and social stories. Parents can choose to attend the programme with a supporting professional if they are attending alone. Understanding Dementia
This course is vital for helping people prepare for the various stages of caring for someone with dementia.
Over five weeks, this programme provides peer support for carers with accompanying embedded learning. It provides insight and guidance through different parts of the dementia pathway, from the impact on memory, how the brain changes, ageing senses, general communication and beyond. Free online carer training in partnership with Promas Online
We are now working in partnership with Promas Online to offer carers the opportunity to complete three online courses:
Course 1 – Are you a carer?
Course 2 – Impacts and challenges
Course 3 – Understanding and coping with challenges

Sunderland College Distance Learning Hub
Sunderland Carers Centre is proud to partner with Sunderland College to bring accessible courses to carers.
We recognise that many people who care for loved ones find it difficult to make time in their day to attend courses in a traditional college/training setting. Sunderland College Distance Learning Hub enables carers to study in their own time, at home, around a caring role.
Sunderland College offer a range of FREE courses where you can obtain a qualification working from home. You will be allocated your own study pack and have a personal tutor who you can contact throughout your studies. You will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and demonstrate your knowledge. The qualifications are also available as on-line study.

Sunderland College provide a job search service, posting details of relevant vacancies for students on their intranet and Facebook site while also using their employer contacts to keep you informed of any job opportunities via your tutor. They also keep in touch after you have successfully completed a course to see how you are progressing towards work and offer further support and will invite you to their exclusive jobs fairs for current and former students.
