Whether your caring role has recently ended or it’s been some time, Sunderland Carers Centre is here to support you through grief, adjustment, and rediscovering what’s next.
Understanding Life After Caring – Life after caring can feel like starting over
When your caring role ends, it can bring mixed emotions – sadness, relief, confusion, or loss of identity. You may also face practical and financial challenges, or feel unsure about how to move forward.
At Sunderland Carers Centre, we understand that this transition takes time. We’re here to help you:
- Adjust emotionally after caring ends
- Manage practical issues such as benefits or housing
- Reconnect with your community
- Rediscover your confidence and future goals
Our Support for Bereaved Carers
Emotional Support:
- One-to-one conversations with our Carer Support Team
- Signposting to counselling and bereavement services in Sunderland
Practical Help:
- Guidance around benefits changes, pensions, and Carer’s Allowance after caring ends
- Advice on dealing with estates, housing, and other practical matters
- Signposting to local and national bereavement charities
Training Programme
We’ve developed a short online course, designed to gently support you after your caring role ends.
You’ll explore:
- Managing grief and change
- Rebuilding confidence
- Looking after your wellbeing
- Reconnecting with community and purpose

- Washington Mind – A local charity providing mental health and wellbeing support, services and training for our local community.
- Sunderland Talking Therapies – Sunderland Talking Therapies offer a number of therapies, classes and groups to help with a range of common mental health difficulties.
- Carers UK Forum – Open 24/7, Carers Connect is an online forum where you can talk about anything related to caring.
