Young Carer's School Card

Young Carer's School Card

Young Carer's School Card

Sam's School Card Story

Hi, I'm Sam. I care for my mum, she is blind.

I'm enjoying my first year in the comp.  It's a big school with lots of pupils and teachers.  It's hard for all the teachers to know my personal situation so I got a school card to help balance my school and home life.

My school card says that I'm allowed extra time to hand my homework in if I need it.  This is because I have to help my sister with hers.  It also says that I have to have my mobile phone on (silent) at all times and that if I'm late I have a very good reason for being late.

It's got my photo on it that I had taken in a photo booth at Morrisons and it's got the head teacher's signature on it.

It's good getting these privileges and benefits and it helps to take some pressure off juggling home and school work.

I got my card because the young carers staff told me about it when I was moving up to the comprehensive school.

I need to get a new one every year.  On the next card I might want other things depending on how my mum is.

What is the Young Carer's School Card?

The Young Carer's School Card is for young people who are having problems at school because they are caring for someone at home.

Young carers can carry the card with them at school to tell teachers when they are having problems.

It could help young carers with things like having to hand in homework late or not being able to stay behind after school without warning.

There are many different reasons for needing a card and it can be made to suit the young carer's needs.
