Always on Call, Always Concerned - New report on older carers

Today The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has launched the results of a new national survey of 639 carers from across the UK.

The results show very clearly that older carers are battling ill-health caused by their caring role. Almost 70% of the older carers in the survey say that caring had a negative impact on their physical health and an equal number say it also had an adverse effect on their mental health. Many reported cancelling a treatment or operation for themselves because of their caring responsibilities.

The report, Always on Call, Always Concerned, surveyed older carers (aged 60 - 94), who look after a sick or disabled family member and found that 65% of older carers have long term health problems or a disability themselves.

The Trust is calling on local authorities and local health providers to give greater recognition to the benefit of supporting older carers, including specific easily accessible, comparatively low-cost preventative services at local level which can improve the lives of carers. Examples include calling on GPs to offer a physical health check to older carers once a year, screening for depression at least once a year, home visits to carers if necessary to fit around their caring role, hospital appointments to be flexible to meet the needs of carers.

Launch of Carer Information Card in Washington

Launch of the new Carer Information CardSeptember sees a new initiative for carers being launched in the Washington area. If successful it is hoped the project will then be rolled out across the whole Wearside area reaching many of the 32,000 carers across the city.

A credit card sized card giving vital contact information for carers will be made available across community venues like GP practices, pharmacies, schools and libraries. The card gives contact details of where carers can go for help and advice and also a number for emergencies to be used during out of normal working hours.
