Carers Rights Day – 29 November 2013

Carers Rights Day logoToday is Carers Rights Day and this year the theme is ‘rights, advice and support’ focusing on ensuring that carers understand their rights and get access to good quality advice that can support them to care.

As part of Carers Rights Day Carers UK have launched a new guide called “Looking after someone – Carers Rights Guide 2013 – 14”.

This guide outlines carers’ essential rights and what financial and practical help is available.

Hope 4 Kidz - Santa's Christmas Party

Hope 4 Kidz is holding a free Santa's Christmas Party at Passion in Holmeside, Sunderland on Sunday 8th December, 12 noon - 4pm for children with special needs and children experiencing extreme circumstances.

Information Stall at Colliery Medical Group Practice

Carers Rights Day logoSunderland Carers' Centre is working with the Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group and local GP practices in the city to identify carers in order to give them the help and support they need.

On Carers Rights Day, Friday 29th November, we will be holding an information stall at the Colliery Medical Group practice in Silksworth Health Centre, 10am - 12 noon.

If you live in Silksworth please pop in and find out how the Carers' Centre can help you.

Disability Specific Swim Session - Saturday 30th November

Sunderland City Council logoThe next disability specific swim session for disabled children and their families is on Saturday 30th November, 4pm - 5pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre.

The cost is £2.10 per person or £5 for a family ticket (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people).

Transition Support Group

Is your son or daughter going through transition from children's services to adult services?

Come along to the Transition Support Group on Thursday 28th November, 10.30am - 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.

Meet other parents in a similar situation and share experiences.

Sunderland Disability Drop-In Day

Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens

To mark the United Nation's International Day of People with Disability, the city's Disability Independent Advisory Group invites people with disabilities, their families, carers and friends to a drop-in event where you can chat to service providers from the areas of health, welfare, education, leisure, transport and more.

Employers for Carers and Carers UK are conducting a survey to find out the key issues and support needs for employees combining work and caring for someone with dementia.

Thank you to Metro Radio's Cash for Kids

Becky Slater receives a cheque from Metro Radio presenters, Steve and Karen.A great big thank you to Metro Radio's charity Cash for Kids who have donated £1169 to the Carers' Centre so that we can get two new computers for the young carers to use.

Not only will the young carers be able to access the internet during their weekly groups, they will also be able to create their own young carers newsletter, design young carers online resources and do their school homework if they do not have a computer at home.

Becky Slater and her sister Nicola went to Metro Radio to be presented with a giant cheque.

Sunderland Empire - Cinderella accessible performances

Relaxed performance - Friday 3rd January 2014 at 2.30pm

Sunderland Empire is holding a relaxed performance of their family pantomime, Cinderella on Friday 3rd January at 2.30pm.

The relaxed performance caters specifically for families and people with learning and behavioural disorders such as autism, by creating a more relaxed atmosphere.  For example:

  • possible changes could be made to lower the sound and dim the lights
  • no one will be asked to be quiet
  • audiences can come and go as they please
  • quiet space will be available during the performance, with activities and fidget toys
  • pre-show familiarisation visits are available

There is also a BSL performance on Friday 20th December 2013 at 7pm.

'We'ar Vision - We'ar Hear' Sensory Exhibition

Do you care for someone who has a sight or hearing impairment?

If so, come along to the 'We'ar Vision - We'ar Hear' Sensory Exhibition on Wednesday 6th November, 10am - 3pm, at the Stadium of Light (Banqueting Suite).

There will be lots of information stalls and exhibitions demonstrating the latest equipment, gadgets and technology available to help people with sensory impairments.

The Carers' Centre will be there too!

Would you like to meet up with other carers on an evening for coffee, tea and a chat?
