New Carers Rights Guide launched on Carers Rights Day

Carers UK have published a new booklet called 'Looking after someone - a guide to carers' rights and benefits 2012/13'.

The guide has been launched as part of national Carers Rights Day.

New research reveals sandwich caring families under pressure


Sandwich generation parents are emotionally and financially overwhelmed by the pressures of raising children alongside caring for ageing relatives, new research from Carers UK reveals.

The research, which coincides with national Carers Rights Day, showed that four in ten (42%) sandwich carers were struggling to cope as their careers, family finances and relationships suffered.

Come along to the private view of the 'Time Well Earned' Photographic Exhibition and win an OLYMPUS camera

OLYMPUS are showing their support for the 'Time Well Earned' Photographic Exhibition and are giving away a free digital camera to one lucky carer who wins a free draw at either of the private view events (12 noon - 3pm and 4pm - 9pm) on Friday 30th November at 'The Place' Gallery, Athenaeum Street, Sunderland SR1 1QX.

Carers Rights Day 2012 - Friday 30th November

'Time Well Earned' Photographic Exhibition

Ashley Sutherland, carer and Friend of Tunstall Hill Committe, is photographed on Tunstall Hill.To celebrate Carers Rights Day 2012, Sunderland Carers' Centre is hosting a photographic exhibition to highlight the importance of family carers taking a break from their caring roles.

The exhibition will feature photographs by Daniel Dale and give a fascinating insight to some of the hobbies and interests carers enjoy when they get those much needed breaks.

The private view will take place on Carers Rights Day, Friday 30th November, 12 noon - 3pm and 4pm - 9pm at 'The Place' Gallery, Athenaeum Street, Sunderland SR1 1QX.

The exhibition will then run from Monday 3rd to Friday 14th December.  'The Place' Gallery is open 9am - 4.30pm from Monday to Thursday and 9am to 3.30pm on Friday.

A Date for your Diary - Christmas Open Day and Fundraiser

Why not join us at Sunderland Carers' Centre and kick start your festive season at our Christmas Open Day and Fundraiser taking place on Friday 7th December, from 10am - 2pm.

The Christmas elves have been busy again, weaving their crafting and baking magic to tempt us to bag a Christmas bargain or two!

The Carers' Centre will be filled with music, good cheer and some nifty footwork from our very own group of Irish dancers!

Feel free to drop in, enjoy a cuppa and soak up the festive atmosphere.  No need to book, just turn up on the day.

Sunderland Carers’ Centre Garden wins Sunderland in Bloom Award of Merit

Members of the community help transform the Carers' Centre garden.Sunderland Carers’ Centre is delighted to have been presented with an Award of Merit at the 2012 Sunderland in Bloom Civic Awards Ceremony which took place yesterday.

The Award of Merit was in Class 2: Best Community Effort.

We received the award as a result of our work in involving the community in the transformation of our new garden at our premises in Thompson Park.

Standing Commission for Carers visits Sunderland Carers’ Centre

Standing Commission for Carers visits Sunderland Carers' CentreOn 6th November 2012, Sunderland Carers’ Centre hosted a visit by the Standing Commission for Carers which is a body that advises National Government on carers’ issues.

The purpose of the visit was a fact finding venture to understand how services for carers in Sunderland are both commissioned and delivered in the broadest sense as well as to hear about specific examples.

Housing 21 - Proposed new Extra Care Scheme at Carley Hill Road, Southwick

Housing 21 would like to invite you to view plans for a proposed new Extra Care Housing scheme on 12th November from 2pm - 7pm at Southwick Community Primary School, Shakespeare Street, Sunderland SR5 2JX.

Full detailed plans and artist's impression will be availabe to view and staff from all partner organisations will be on hand to talk through the plans and answer questions about the scheme and its delivery.

Sunderland Carers Group - December meeting cancelled

The next meeting of the Sunderland Carers Group on Friday 7th December at Pallion Action Group has been cancelled as the group members will be attending the Carers' Centre's Christmas Open Day and Fundraiser.

The Christmas Open Day and Fundraiser will take place on Friday 7th December, 10am - 2pm, at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.  All carers welcome.

Watch footage from the Sunderland Carers' Centre Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of Sunderland Carers' Centre took place on Tuesday 23rd October at the Stadium of Light.

At the meeting the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Iain Kaye, gave an address, and architect, Ged McCormack, gave a presentation about the new Carers' Centre premises.
