No Voice Unheard, No Right Ignored

The government has launched a consultation for people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health conditions and their families. It seeks your views in order to strengthen the rights of people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health issues to enable them to live independently.

'No voice unheard, no right ignored’ aims for four key things:

• People in charge, supported by family and friends

• Inclusion and independence in the community – people should not routinely be sent away from their homes and communities or to institutions which restrict access to their community or to inappropriate care

• The right care in the right place – there should be real person centred planning with the individual themselves at the heart

• Very clear accountability and responsibility throughout the system

To read the consultation in a number of formats (including easy read) and watch a video summary click on the ‘Strengthening rights and choices for people to live in the community’ page of the government’s website:

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/strengthening-rights-for-people-with-learning-disabilities

Sunderland People First are working with Healthwatch Sunderland to consult with various groups around the document. They are very keen to receive input from family / unpaid carers and would welcome your thoughts and experiences.

Their aim is to collate responses for the government paper but they will also be writing a report which will be presented to the Sunderland Health and Wellbeing Board.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact them on 5214123.

They do have a very tight deadline so would appreciate feedback by Tuesday 26th May.

They have prepared a Survey Monkey questionnaire with 10 questions linked to government proposals.

National Strategy for Mental Health - Online Survey

NHS England has announced a new Mental Health Taskforce which will develop a five year national strategy for mental health, covering all ages. The strategy will be published in the summer, and will be aligned with NHS England's Five Year Forward View for the whole NHS. It is crucial that the strategy is informed by a wide range of lived experience and professional expertise.

Rethink Mental Illness and Mind are members of the Taskforce, and they want to ensure the views and ideas of a wide range of people, including people with mental health problems, families, professionals and wider stakeholder are gathered. Any answers you give will be shared anonymously with the Mental Health Taskforce.

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete but your answers will be saved so you can come back to it at any time. You can write as little or as much as you would like in response to this survey.

The survey will close at 12am on 15th May 2015.

Mencap Hear My Voice Campaign

Everyday issues like poor healthcare, hate crime and social isolation affect 1.4 million people with a learning disability and their families in the UK.

But despite affecting the lives of millions, these issues often go ignored. This means things don't get better as these aren't at the top of political parties' agenda.
