The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Norma Wright officially opens Sunderland Carers' CentreThe Mayor and Mayoress officially open Sunderland Carers' Centre's new premises

Sunderland Carers' Centre's new premises at Thompson Park were officially opened by The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Norma Wright and the Mayoress, Mrs Valerie Sibley.

The Mayor said "Caring for someone isn't easy and the role carers take on often goes unrecognised. Carers need access to the right information and support to help them in their caring roles, after all, without their support the health and social care services would collapse.

These new premises are a truly fantastic resource and will provide a friendly and welcoming place so carers can get this vital information, support and a listening ear for many years to come.

I hope the new premises encourage more carers to get involved in the centre and all that it has to offer.

It gives me particular pleasure to officially open these new premises and welcome Sunderland Carers' Centre back to Southwick in time before my mayoral year of office is complete."

Ailsa Martin, the centre manager said "We are delighted with the new premises at Thompson Park but we have so many people to thank for making this happen.

The Council have been extremely generous and have given us a long term lease on the building for a peppercorn rent.

We then had to raise substantial funds to carry out the refurbishments. Sunderland North Area Committee and Gentoo North Customer Panel have both made grants so we could make a welcoming public area where carers can drop in and browse for information.

The Southwick councillors and the Friends of Thompson Park have also been incredibly supportive in making the move a reality.

Carers and volunteers were at the forefront of fundraising activities and now the hard work has paid off and they can really start to enjoy the new building.

Denise Robertson was also a great source of guidance on where and how to get funding."
