Carers Evening Get-Together - Thursday 4th April

Would you like to meet up with other carers on an evening?

If so, come along to the next Carers Evening Get-Together on Thursday 4th April, 6.30pm - 8pm, at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.

It does not matter who you care for – all carers are welcome. This is a chance for you to have a coffee and a chat with other carers.

A member of staff will be there to organise refreshments and give any specific advice if necessary but the aim is to be relaxed and for you to take a bit of a breather.

No need to book, just turn up.

Disabled Children and Families Fun Event

Sunderland City Council logoThere will be a Disabled Children and Families Fun Event at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre on Wednesday 3rd April.

Activities will include tennis coaching, indoor adventure soft play, sensory room and fun and floats swim session.

The price is £2.70 per young person. Accompanying adult or carer free of charge.

Young Carer wins Overall Winner at the Young Acheivers' Awards 2013

Congratulations to young carer, Ross Muscroft, for winning two Awards at the Sunderland Young Acheivers' Awards 2013.

As well as winning Young Carer of the Year, Ross also won the top award of the evening - the Overall Winner of the Andy Neal Award.

The presentation ceremony took place last night at the Stadium of Light and the awards were presented by Sunderland City Council leader, Paul Watson, and Metro FM DJs, Steve Furnell and Karen Wright.

14 year old Ross cares for his mum, Paula and his sister, Nicole and attends Sunderland Carers' Centre Young Carers Group.

The University of Sunderland unveils the 'Time Well Earned' Photography Exhibition

Time Well Earned Exhibition at the University's Showcase Gallery.The University of Sunderland and Sunderland Carers' Centre have joined forces to raise the profile of carers by organising the 'Time Well Earned' Photography Exhibition.

Last night Professor Julie Mennell, University of Sunderland Deputy Vice-Chancellor, opened the exhibition at the University's Showcase Gallery in the Priestman Building, City Campus, Sunderland.

The photographs, taken by Daniel Dale, show carers taking well deserved breaks from their caring roles.

Carers Week 2013 Survey - Prepared to Care?

Carers Week logoThis year the theme of Carers Week (10 - 16 June) is Prepared to Care?

The Carers Week partners have launched a survey to find out how Prepared to Care? we are in the UK and are asking carers what would make a real difference to their lives.

The survey closes Friday 3rd May and the results will be published at the start of Carers Week.

'Time Well Earned' Photography Exhibition displayed at the University of Sunderland

Carer, Martin Hutchinson wearing armour.The "precious' breaks that carers take from their caring roles have been captured on camera and will be unveiled at a North East exhibition next week organised by the University of Sunderland and Sunderland Carers' Centre.

The exhibition called 'Time Well Earned' will be displayed at the University of Sunderland's Showcase Gallery in the Priestman Building, City Campus, Sunderland, between Tuesday 19 March and Friday 12 April 2013 (Gallery open 9am - 5pm).

The photographs show carers taking well deserved breaks from their caring roles and the idea for the project came from Daniel Dale, who is studying a photography degree at Cleveland College of Art and Design.

Research reveals over 2 million give up work to care

A staggering 2.3 million adults have given up work to care for elderly parents, disabled or seriously ill loved ones, Carers UK and business forum Employers for Carers today reveal.

A Carers UK/YouGov Poll shows just over 1 in 5 UK adults have seen their work negatively impacted as a result of caring (22%), including 2.3 million who have quit work and almost 3 million who have reduced working hours.

The impact on family finances of giving up work or cutting working hours can include the risk of financial hardship and debt and the long-term damage to carers' careers and pensions.

Carers Coffee Morning - Monday 18th March

The next Carers Coffee Morning is on Monday 18th March, 10.30am - 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.

All carers welcome - no matter who you care for.  Come along for a cuppa and chat with other carers.

Family Easter Fayre - Saturday 16th March

Sunderland Young Carers, the Mount Kilimanjaro First Aid Community Programme and University of Sunderland are holding a Family Easter Fayre on

Saturday 16th March, 11am - 2pm, at

Southwick Community Primary School

Shakespeare Street

Sunderland

SR5 2JX

With raffle, face painting, table top sales, craft tables, Easter egg hunt and much more!

Entry 50p

The event will also raise awareness about young carers and how Sunderland Carers' Centre can help them.  If you are a young person looking after a family member please come along to find out more about the help and support available to you.
