Grow and Succeed in Sunderland

The Carers’ Centre is able to offer a ‘Grow and Succeed’ taster session in partnership with a leading personal development organisation on:

Friday 20th September

11.30am – 1.30pm

at ‘The Place’, Athenaeum Street, Sunderland SR1 1QX

The 'Grow and Succeed' programme offers adult carers the opportunity to spend some time on themselves, working out how best they can look after themselves and what they'd like life really to be like.

Carers Coffee Evening - Wednesday 4th September

Would you like to meet up with other carers on an evening for a coffee, tea and a chat?

If so, come along to our Carers Coffee Evening on Wednesday 4th September, 6.30pm - 8.15pm, at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.

All carers welcome.  No need to book, just turn up.

Washington Open Door Morning Group Meeting Cancelled

Please note that the Washington Open Door Morning Group meeting on Monday 2nd September at Victoria Road Health Centre has been cancelled.

The next meeting will be on Monday 16th September, 10am - 11.30am.  It is for anyone who cares for or is concerned about a family member or friend with a drug or alcohol problem.

Male Carers Group Outdoor Bowling - Back by popular demand!

Male carers bowling in Thompson ParkAre you a male carer? Want to try outdoor bowling?

Join the Male Carers Group on Thursday 5th September, 1pm - 3pm, for outdoor bowling in Thompson Park.

This will be the men's second outing to the bowling green.  They enjoyed it so much in July that they have arranged this additional visit.

They will meet at the Carers' Centre at 1pm and then walk to the bowling green. There will be a small fee to pay (approx. £2) and please wear flat shoes.

Disability Specific Swim Session - Saturday 31st August

Sunderland City Council LogoThe next disability specific swim session for disabled children and their families is on Saturday 31st August, 4.00 pm - 5.00 pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre. 

The cost is £2.10 per person or £5.00 for a family ticket (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people).

Beach Party at The Northmoor Co-op Store

Staff from Northmoor Co-operative Store hold a Beach Party fundraiser.The Northmoor Co-operative store held a fundraiser today to raise money for Carers Trust, of which Sunderland Carers' Centre is a Network Partner.  'Beach Party' was the theme.

Carers Trust is The Co-operative's Charity of the Year for 2013.

The Co-operative aims to raise £5 million for Carers Trust by the end of the year and has recently hit the £2.5 million milestone.

Parent Carers - Find out about the Carers Breaks and Opportunities Scheme

Parent carers attending the summer holiday session for disabled children on Wednesday 21st August at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre will also have the chance to find out more about the Carers Breaks and Opportunities Scheme (CBOS).

CBOS offers carers the chance to take a break from their caring responsibilities or take part in activities of their choice that will help to maintain or improve their quality of life. It awards grants of up to £500 to carers who meet the criteria.

Staff from the Carers' Centre will be there 10am - 12 noon to tell you more and answer any questions.

Male Carers - A Day at the Races

Are you a male carer?  Fancy a day at the races?

We have organised a trip for male carers to York Races on Wednesday 21st August and there are places still available.

Transport is free leaving the Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, at 10am. We will depart York Races prior to the last race (usually around 4.45pm).

There is an entrance fee for carers to pay for the races - approx. £8.

You may also wish to bring along a camping chair to sit on during the day.

Making Sunderland a Dementia Friendly Community

Sunderland City Council logoSunderland City Council want to find out what people with memory problems do in Sunderland, what facilities they use and what helps or hinders them.

They want to find out what makes it easier for people with memory problems to live and participate in community life.

Coalfields Carers Group - Lunch at The Haven

The Coalfields Carers Group is for carers who live in the Coalfields area e.g. Shiney Row, Houghton, Hetton, Fence Houses etc.

The next meeting of the Coalfields Carers Group is on Wednesday 14th August, 12 noon - 4pm when the group will be meeting for lunch at The Haven, South Shields. 12 noon pick up at The Hetton Centre. 4pm collection from The Haven to return to The Hetton Centre.

Transport is free but carers will have to meet the cost of their own lunch etc.

Join the Carers’ Centre for the Sunderland Big Walk 2013

Sunderland City Council logoOn Sunday 22nd September 2013 hundreds of walkers will take part in the Sunderland Big Walk.

They will set out from the National Glass Centre and make their way along either a 6.5 mile route (to Washington Wetlands Centre) or a 11.5 mile route (to Penshaw Monument).

Entry is £5 per adult, £3 per child (12 - 16 years), free for under 12s.

Staff members from Sunderland Carers’ Centre are going to take part in the shorter 6.5 mile walk to raise funds for the Carers’ Centre. We would really like carers to join us.

Caring with Confidence - new dates announced


Caring with Confidence Sunderland Carers' Centre is pleased to announce the dates of the next round of Caring with Confidence.


This time the sessions will take place at Washington Primary Care Centre, Parkway, Washington NE38 7QS.


Carers are welcome to attend the introduction session on Tuesday 1st October, 11am - 2pm. They can then decide which of the other six sessions they would like to do.

Please note there will be no meeting of the Washington Mental Health Carers Group (held at The Galleries Day Unit) in August due to the school summer holidays.

The next meeting will be on Friday 27th September, 1.30pm - 3.30pm, at The Galleries Day Unit.
